He had been seen wearing his shirt inside out—twice, even after being gently nudged about it. He had also noticed himself struggling to slip his feet into his sandals. “I have to be there at our shop, and one of my neighbours needs me at the moment. But I will figure it out,” my uncle politely put off his close relative’s attempt to persuade him. It took nearly a month before he could no longer figure out the answer to “9 + 5”, and his left side became disobedient to his will. Then he had to be carried to Yangon. The tumour had since been removed, but the impression it left was strong. ——— “Yes, we saw some improvements compared to last night,” my cousin confirmed. “Uncle, I have arrived!” I greeted him. A nod followed. “And you know I am here, don’t you?” A little glow sparked in his eyes, followed by another nod. But slowly, his hand began to point towards his mouth. So, we buckled up. “Water?” A close relative held his right hand. And another nod! We soaked a piece of cotton, then applied it to his lips three times, making sure his thirst was relieved. But I did not squeeze it too much. An IV drip was already in place. ——— Having been in a coma and gone through rehabilitation myself, I felt a nudge of contemplation arrive at the doorstep of my very heart. “It is interesting that we think we are who we think we are, yet in such a moment, we couldn’t summon even a simple twitch of the hand so easily.” After a pause, another enquiry followed: What a miraculous click it is—to realise how the brain will always reason to comfort us, even as it seeks justification for postponing our actions, for procrastinating, rather than steadfastly refusing to do what we know we should do. Because refusal is not comfortable either. Neither is acting on it. So we choke ourselves in such ambiguous no-man’s-lands. In other words, we are designed for comfort, as science would say; our nervous system will side with familiar hell over unfamiliar heaven. We are then forced to do it. ——— A whisper from my heart prompted me: wouldn’t it be easier to just act upon what we truly believe? I nodded through action, prompted by such a glimpse of our existence on Earth. And these words are one such breeze. … #BeforeWeAreForcedTo #life #mindfulness #inspiration #LifeLessons N.B: Thanks for the first two pictures, my dear cousin. …
