There are two versions of Karate that exist. The original Okinawan karate, and the Japanese karate. Okinawan karate was about fighting and winning the quickest way possible. Japanese became about showmanship, flowery movements, diluted effectiveness due to the emphasis on kata and performance. An original Okinawan master went to compete against the best Japanese karate masters and easily defeated them all because the Japanese did not train to win a fight; they trained to look impressive, alone, in front of the audience, as a performance. Unfortunately the original fighting style of the Okinawans has mostly been lost or replaced due to GIs from WWII learning Japanese Karate and bring that back to the states.
I have a black belt in so-called traditional Okinawan karate, except the more I look back at it and the training it is more closely aligned with the Japanese performance karate America adopted. Mostly ineffective and almost totally useless in a fight with someone who has trained in any style of hand to hand combat. An initial black belt means you can perform kata and bunkai nearly flawlessly. Kata by yourself against no opponent, basically a dance. Bunkai a dance with a partner where both perform a specific practiced choreographed fight where the student testing always wins.
If you are a better student and really want to learn effective fight and defense techniques you find another like minded person or small group and you spar using your techniques. This quickly teaches you that 95%of what you are taught is ineffective at best, and potentially deadly to yourself at worst. You will begin to learn how to actually fight when the person across from you is actually fighting back and not using pre determined moves.
Kata can be beautiful because of its stylized routines. It can teach your body muscle memory for stances, movements, combinations, attacks, and blocks. It can also begin to teach your mind to recognize patterns of how attacks are telegraphed from your opponents movements. But if you do not separately practice these steps in a sparring setting to find the actual useful way to employ your techniques you are doomed to fail.
