TSS is caused by bacteria from leaving a tampon in for too long. I don't know about any connection between tampon use and cervical cancer, but I can say that I have never used tampons, but every pap smear I've ever had has been abnormal. I googled this question, and studies haven't found a link between tampon use and HPV infection. So there you go.
