@anonymously.m3too: In mid-October 2026, MapQuest launched a new feature called the "Surveillance Layer" within its mobile application, which displays the locations of automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras from Flock Safety and various other manufacturers, including Motorola Solutions, Axon, and Genetec. This feature allows users to toggle the Surveillance layer on and off alongside traditional map options such as traffic and incidents. Once activated, the map is populated with animated icons indicating the presence of surveillance cameras, accompanied by directional cones that show the cameras' scanning angles. Users can access detailed information about each camera, including its coordinates, manufacturer, and type, by tapping on the respective icon. The underlying database for this feature is built on crowdsourced public mapping data, providing a comprehensive overview of urban surveillance infrastructure, although it may not include recently installed or unreported cameras. Doug Berger, MapQuest's General Manager, emphasized that this update responds to user demand, as the identification of automated road surveillance has become one of the top three requests amid growing concerns regarding privacy and the proliferation of ALPR networks. #cameras #flock #flockcameras #map #surveillance
