I had to pull a “firearm” on an AC repairman. I was home with my 3yr old. Hubby was at work. The guy said my AC was totally fried and couldn’t be repaired. Full replacement was the only option & it was 17k. When I pushed back and said I was going to wait for a second opinion he said he just needed to go into my attic to take pictures for their file. That didn’t make any sense so I said I don’t want photos We’re done here. he walked around me & started walking up my stairs. He was determined to go back upstairs. He got super aggressive & kept walking up so I said I was getting my firearm & started opening a drawer & he left pretty quickly. I was bluffing. I didn’t actually have one but it was so scary I’m glad it worked. Now I wont let anyone inside my home if I’m alone. It’s scary out there!

Ask a realtor if you are looking for reliable people to work on your house. They work with a lot of contractors and they will only use the best. They usually have an entire for whatever repairs you need.

This is standard for the uk! Normally they will come knocking on the doors during the summer saying things like you drive needs doing, your roof looks old and possibly leaking! I live in an area with mainly elderly people (especially down are road) so always ring around letting them know x

When i was in high school a “traveling” irishman spoke to our graduating class about coming to work at to restore castles in Ireland. Free room and board in exchange for labor. Two kids and one of their gf’s ended up going and it was a nightmare situation.

If those men are putting in that much work, they might as well turn legit at this point. 😆

to anyone dealing with serious issues and are feeling clueless... if you live somewhere with village engineers... this is what you can use them for. i got tired of waterproofing salesmen all telling me different things of what needed to be done, so i called the building/permit dept and their engineers gave actual professional opinions without trying to sell me shit

This happened to my folks. They were scammed out of $50,000 by a roofer supposedly located in NJ.

My husband is a contractor. ALWAYS, ALWAYS call their insurer and make sure they’re not lying about being insured. Too many contractors prey on the elderly.

I've been in biz in the construction industry for over 25 years and anyone who is on the up and up never minds proving they're a legit company to a potential customer. That's one of the first red flags.

Oh that’s so awful. That poor man scammed out of his life savings. Last week, my mom had someone call from what she thought was her credit card company telling her that her account had been compromised. They emailed her a link that allowed them to get into her phone and start getting into her Gmail and her credit cards, etc. Fortunately, I have an alert set up that saw that someone changed her Gmail password and I called her while she was on the phone with them on another phone. They heard her talking to someone and asking questions they got off but that before they were able to get into her credit cards. We had to scrub her phone, change all passwords and get new credit card sent. I’m glad that your mom was savvy and nervous. My mom used to be more savvy, but has been going downhill a little bit. I feel so bad for these people being scammed out of their life savings.

A great way to find trustworthy contractors is to look up local Union Halls and ask them to provide you a list of contractors members! IBEW for electricians, UA for plumbing and pipe fitting, NABTU for builders and construction workers, etc.

For the water in the basement, look into the chance that it’s a sewage backup. What I thought was water flowing from my walls to my basement drains was actually the opposite 🤢 and not one contractor suggested that possibility. I still get a little water in the basement during heavy rains but the flooding stopped when the sewage line was cleaned out.

in the state i live, you can look up contractors insurance on the dept of labor and industry. most states should have this. if they arent insured, definitely don't hire them. you can also use it to verify the certificate they provide you is current. because even legit businesses sometimes let their insurance lapse for one reason or another
