One of my theories is maybe Korra and Asami tried to maybe restore the connection to the past avatar cycle with the spirits and either a spirit(like the face stealer) or Vaatu himself may have killed Asami causing the berserk anime protagonist cliché from Korra.

I think humans were tryna use spirit energy for themselves the spirits dinit like that and try to sabatoge everthing and cussed a huge explosion that used spirit energy that would’ve destroyed the world korra help the blast calm down and it would’ve been worse if korra dinit do something

My theory is they were trying to harness the spirit portals energy to not only advance in technology, but open other portals as well. The machine probably overloaded or become unstable and vaatu seized the opportunity to free himself and corrupt the world.
