Because "Son of David" is a title, not a biology claim. *Son of Joseph* = who raised him, his earthly family. People in Nazareth did call him that: "Isn't this Joseph's son?" (Luke 4:22) *Son of David* = who he is legally and prophetically. In Jewish culture: 1. *Legal lineage goes through the father.* Joseph was from the house of David (Matthew 1:1-16 traces Joseph back to David). So by being Joseph's legal son, Jesus was legally a Son of David, heir to David's throne. 2. *It was the Messiah's title.* God promised David: "Your house and your kingdom will endure forever" (2 Samuel 7:16). The prophets said the Messiah would be a descendant of David who restores the kingdom. So when people shouted "Son of David!" (like Bartimaeus in Mark 10:47), they were saying "You are the Messiah King." 3. *Joseph was common, David was king.* Saying "son of Joseph the carpenter" meant "ordinary guy." Saying "son of David" meant "royal heir." So they called him both, for different reasons: - Son of Joseph when talking about his family on earth - Son of David when recognizing his kingship Matthew starts his Gospel with "Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham" on purpose to make that royal claim in the first verse.
