Tony Tormenta was the brother of powerful cartel boss Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, while Z-1 was a former Mexican military operative who became one of Osiel’s most trusted enforcers. During the late 1990s, Guzmán Decena helped establish Los Zetas, an elite group of former soldiers recruited to provide protection and carry out operations for the Gulf Cartel. While Z-1 helped transform the organization’s security apparatus into a heavily militarized force, Tony Tormenta developed his influence within the cartel’s trafficking and financial operations, particularly around Matamoros, Tamaulipas. However, their criminal careers followed dramatically different paths. On November 21, 2002, Z-1 was killed during a confrontation with the Mexican military, allowing Heriberto Lazcano, known as Z-3, to eventually emerge as the dominant leader of Los Zetas. Following Osiel’s arrest in 2003 and extradition in 2007, Tony Tormenta became one of the Gulf Cartel’s most powerful leaders. By 2010, the relationship between the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas had collapsed into a territorial war, turning former allies into bitter enemies. On November 5, 2010, Tony Tormenta was killed during a major Mexican military operation in Matamoros. Their stories illustrate how the criminal alliance built under Osiel Cárdenas eventually fractured, contributing to years of organized crime violence across northeastern Mexico.
