@elly.psychologist: Not every form of control comes with rules spelled out. Sometimes nobody ever tells you no, and yet you find yourself turning down invitations, putting things back on the shelf and quietly checking their mood before you make even small decisions. That’s what makes coercive control such a hidden form of emotional abuse. It usually grows out of someone feeling threatened by your independence. Your friendships, the way you choose to spend your own money, the people who might remind you who you are outside the relationship, all of it can stir up insecurity they don’t know how to manage. Saying outright that you can’t do those things would sound controlling, and they know it, so the message comes through other routes. A pointed comment designed to make you feel guilty. A frosty silence when you get home from seeing friends, as though you’re not there. A sigh, an eye roll, an argument that seems to appear out of nowhere. Each one says the same thing, that you’ll pay for it emotionally. Even when you know perfectly well you haven’t done anything wrong, your body starts to absorb that link between your choices and their displeasure. Because we’re wired to protect our closest relationships, you begin steering around whatever sets them off. You stop making plans because you know the evening will be spoiled by guilt anyway. You leave the new top or the little treat in the basket because it isn’t worth the atmosphere at home. On the surface it can look like your own decision, which is exactly why this kind of emotional abuse is so easy to miss and so hard to name. But giving up ordinary, reasonable parts of your life to keep someone else comfortable isn’t compromise, it’s the slow work of emotional abuse. These aren’t extravagant demands. Seeing people you care about and having a say over your own money are basic freedoms, and losing them bit by bit can leave you feeling smaller and more isolated than you ever expected. Coercive control is now recognised in law in several countries precisely because its impact is so real, even without a single raised voice. Naming it as emotional abuse, rather than as you simply being accommodating, is often the first step towards reclaiming the right to choose for yourself again Official accounts and resources: www.ellyanastasiades.com #emotionalabuse #emotional #abuse #relationshipabuse #emotionalabusiverelationship

The coercive control I deal with every time I invite anyone over, not even me inviting someone over. It’s every time people come over, friends, family, I am punished every time, but it’s not outright, it’s not clear why he’s upset and punishing me, but he is punishing me, I pay for it, in full. Every. single. time. Every single Christmas. Every single holiday. Every single barbecue, birthday and weekend that I wanted to have family over or they want to come over. . Even when it was his own daughter. Even when it was his own daughter from out of town. I am punished for visits. Especially if there was an argument with him and them, he takes it all out on me. This very last Christmas, when family was coming over on Christmas Day this past year, he screamed in my face because he wanted me to wrap the presents he had bought me from him, and I said no, he can wrap the presents that he bought for me. He screamed in my face and called me the worst names imaginable. I spent the next five months living downstairs and went through the midlife crisis. He’s been out of town for the past month and coming back in a week. We will see if he took any time to learn and grow on his own or if he is going to come back exactly the same. I have been fully at peace while he has been gone. I am at peace with being alone, alone with my own thoughts, alone in our dream home. While I was out of town for an extended amount of time, he said it was the opposite, every single day was torturous for him, he was so busy distracting himself with music with TV, with friends, he could not stand to be alone with his own thoughts, and he was terrified to be alone in this house and alone with himself. Meanwhile, I am so filled with gratitude, so filled with self love, and so filled with peace, I’m not looking forward to the chaos, Complete chaos, he creates on a daily basis when he comes back. He is a tornado of chaos inside and it spills out. He performs to everyone that he has it together and that he is generous and kind, at the same time the tornado is churning and ready to destroy the moment the performance for everyone else is over.

My ex wife would do this about going to AA meetings. She would ask how is it fair I get to do that while she stays at home with the kids.
