DANGME FESTIVALS SEASON 2026: AYIKUMA NGMAYEM FESTIVAL THE GRAND DURBAR IN THE VIDEO: “BLEMA DO” GROUP PERFORMS THE TRADITIONAL DANGME AKPASA DANCE The Blema Do Group delivers a vibrant cultural performance of Akpasa, a traditional musical genre and recreational dance of the Dangme people. Characterised by its distinctive movements, Akpasa has traditionally been performed by both men and women at social gatherings, festivals, durbars, funerals, community events and other occasions. The people of Ayikuma, within the Sɛ (Shai) Dangme Traditional Area, have come together with traditional leaders, dignitaries, citizens and visitors to celebrate their rich Dangme culture, traditions, history and heritage. Led by the Chiefs and Queen Mothers of Ayikuma, the Grand Durbar brought the community together for a vibrant celebration of Dangme identity through traditional regalia, music, dance and customary practices. CELEBRATING DANGME HERITAGE The Grand Durbar showcased the richness of Dangme traditional heritage through: * A grand procession of traditional leaders adorned in beautiful royal regalia. * Traditional Dangme music and dances expressing the cultural identity of the people. * Customary rites and cultural displays highlighting Ayikuma’s traditions and heritage. * The gathering of chiefs, Queen Mothers, elders, state officials, religious leaders, dignitaries, citizens and visitors in a shared celebration of culture and identity. THE SPRINKLING OF NGMA AT THE GRAND DURBAR The sprinkling of Ngma (millet) is an important ritual associated with Ngmayem and forms part of the Grand Durbar activities. It carries historical, cultural and spiritual significance within the festival traditions, reflecting the community’s connection to its heritage and ancestral practices. PRESERVING OUR HISTORY AND IDENTITY The Grand Durbar provided an opportunity to showcase Ayikuma’s history, traditions and identity while passing cultural knowledge on to present and future generations. Through these celebrations, ancestral traditions are kept alive, cultural knowledge is shared, and younger generations are encouraged to learn about, appreciate and take pride in their heritage. Our ancestors. Our history. Our heritage. Our identity. #AyikumaNgmayem2026 #DangmeFestivals2026 #Dangme #DangmeCulture #DangmeHeritage
