EIGHT MONTHS OF WORK, UNDONE IN WEEKS. Surendra Singh Choudhary, known online as Bittu Tabahi, spent eight months cleaning the heavily polluted Ajnar River in his village in Madhya Pradesh, India. He did the work on his own, with no help from the government or any organization, and he often pulled out tonnes of garbage using his bare hands or plastic gloves. His videos reached millions of people. Industrialist Anand Mahindra gave him a public shout-out, a Dutch NGO offered him a job, and the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh honored him in September. He then traveled to other cities to lead cleanup drives, collecting hundreds of kilograms of waste in Delhi, more than 2,400 kilograms in Gurugram, and hundreds more on the beaches of Mumbai. When he returned home, he found the river he had worked so hard to clean covered in trash again. The water had turned black, and flower petals, clothes, and plastic containers used during religious rituals were floating on the surface. In a video, he said he never imagined that eight months of his effort could go to waste like this. Even so, he has already started cleaning the river again. In another video, he explained that he does not know how to swim, but he still steps into the water to pull out the trash. Few people would have the strength to begin the same job twice, and his story shows how much a river depends on the people who live beside it. #RiverCleanup #Environment See less
