@ksbw_8: The UC Santa Cruz Arboretum is displaying a developing corpse flower bud as visitors wait for the plant to bloom. The bud went on display Wednesday during the arboretum’s regular hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to a social media post from the arboretum. The bloom’s timing has not been announced. When the flower opens, the arboretum plans to extend its hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day. The bloom lasts only a short time, and the arboretum encouraged visitors to check its social media and email for an announcement. Garden Advocates and higher-level arboretum members will have access to a special after-hours viewing on the evening the flower opens. Admission is free for arboretum members and UC Santa Cruz students. Tickets cost $13 for adults, $10 for seniors 65 and older, and $7 for youth ages 4 to 17. What is a corpse flower? "The corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum) is the largest unbranched inflorescence in the plant kingdom, boasts a powerful stink, and blooms for just 2-3 days once every two to three years. The bloom can grow up to 9 feet tall," according to the U.S. Botanic Garden. The odor has often been compared with rotting flesh.
