Who Were the First Crusaders? The Real Story of the Walk to Jerusalem (1096–1099) A Pope gave one speech in a French field. Within months, tens of thousands of ordinary people were walking to Jerusalem. ⚔️ In 1095, Pope Urban II called for a holy war. According to chroniclers, the crowd roared “God wills it!” and began sewing red crosses onto their clothes. Many of them had never held a sword. The first wave wasn’t an army. It was a mob. A preacher named Peter the Hermit, reportedly riding a donkey, gathered an estimated 15,000 to 40,000 farmers, women, children and old men. No training. No supply lines. Just faith. In October 1096, a Turkish ambush at Civetot in Anatolia wiped out most of them. Then came the knights, and the vow. A cloth cross on the shoulder meant a promise made before God, and turning back risked excommunication. What followed was brutal: frozen mountain passes, desert thirst, disease, ambush. Tens of thousands set out. By June 1099, an estimated 12,000 fighting men, including about 1,500 cavalry, reached Jerusalem. They stormed the city on July 15. The slaughter of Jerusalem’s residents that followed is part of this story too. The men who later wept in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre were farmers, craftsmen, foot soldiers and nobles who believed God had called them by name. History That Sounds Like Fiction, because this really happened. Heroes? Believers? Killers? Maybe all three. What drove ordinary people to walk thousands of kilometers into the unknown: faith, fear, land, or glory?
