I think the older generations also don’t realize this when they complain of Gen Z being nihilistic. We started coming of age when he came around, and for a decade before all the millennials had created the tumbler era optimism, equal marriage was just legalized, Obama was the first black president, life was half the price, people had different opinions but clearly there was a general sense of morality and shared objective reality. Then as soon as you became an adult and get your turn, all that fell apart. Then Covid came and took away key moments like graduations from college and high school, proms etc. The insurrection happened, and genocides began being funded from our tax dollars. We then got dumped into a world where most couldn’t get a job, and most can’t afford to live on their own, another endless war started, and the era of AI began. An era of constant surveillance and online presence. The fall of democracy and rise of fascism. Good luck ever affording a house. We were advertised one world and got a world crumbling and on fire. So yeah, Gen Z really doesn’t have that millennial hopefulness, optimism, and ambition the millennials have before us had.
