🎶✨ Francisco Tárrega — Gran Vals George Sakellariou — solo guitar 🎸 • There's an irony that didn't fit in the overlay: Nokia named the ringtone "Grande valse" — the exact same title as the Chopin piece that had inspired Tárrega 70 years earlier. Without knowing it, the Finnish company closed a circle that spans three countries, two centuries, and two composers who never met. Chopin wrote his Grande Valse Brillante in 1833, in France, for salon piano. • Tárrega heard it, felt that those notes were asking for guitar strings, and transformed them into something new. Nokia took four bars of that something new and placed them in two billion pockets. None of the three planned any of it. What makes the Gran Vals singular isn't the melody you recognize — it's everything that comes before and after it. The entire piece lasts under three minutes and shifts character several times: there are lyrical passages, ornamental runs, moments of near silence. The four bars Nokia chose are the simplest in the work. Tárrega, who could make the guitar imitate an entire orchestra, became famous precisely for the part where he decided not to show everything he knew. It's the kind of paradox only classical music produces — the most-reproduced passage in history was written by someone technically capable of writing something far more complex, who chose simplicity with surgical precision. • George Sakellariou plays here on an 1862 Antonio de Torres — the luthier who invented the shape of the modern classical guitar, the equivalent of a Stradivarius for guitarists. Sakellariou was born in Athens in 1944, studied with Andrés Segovia, and at 20 founded the Guitar Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music — one of the first undergraduate guitar programs in the United States. What you hear in this recording is neither nostalgia nor historical reverence. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music, every day in your feed. • • • #classicalguitar #guitar #classicalmusic
