As a Christian, I disagree with the claim that monogamy is for poor men. A man’s wealth does not determine God’s standard for marriage. Jesus grounded marriage in creation: a man joined to his wife, and “the two shall become one flesh” (Matthew 19:4–6). He gave no exemption for wealthy men. Deuteronomy 17:17 even warned kings against multiplying wives. The restriction addressed powerful men too. The claim that priests and rulers invented monogamy to control poor men needs historical evidence. Monogamous marriage rules existed before Christianity. Governments and churches influencing marriage laws does not prove the story you have presented. Also, pointing to wealthy men with multiple partners does not establish that their conduct is right. People can admire someone’s achievements while disagreeing with their personal choices. If society excuses wealthy men, that exposes a double standard; it does not create moral permission. And acknowledging someone’s feelings does not require approving everything they want to do. Christianity calls both men and women to submit their desires to God. The Bible records polygamy, but recording a practice does not automatically make it God’s ideal or a command for Christians. Financial provision matters, but marriage also requires faithfulness, love, and responsibility. Becoming rich does not release a Christian from obedience to God.
