Flor de la Mar · Lisbon – Kilwa – Mombasa – Anjediva – Cannanore – Cochin – near Zanzibar – Mozambique Island · 25 March 1505 – February 1507 In 1505, the Flor de la Mar sailed from Lisbon on 25 March in the fleet of Francisco de Almeida, the first viceroy of Portuguese India: 21 ships, 1,500 soldiers, and 1,000 sailors. Her captain was João da Nova, who carried a royal commission to command the Indian coast patrol. At Kilwa, on 23 July, the ruler fled and Almeida set up a ruler of his own and began a fort. At Mombasa, on 13 August, the city resisted. The Portuguese stormed it at dawn the next day and sacked it. From Malindi the fleet crossed to India. Almeida began a fort on Anjediva Island in September, another at Cannanore in October, and reached Cochin at the end of the month. At Cochin Almeida refused Nova's commission. The Flor, a 400-ton ship, could not enter the coast's lagoons and rivers. Nova chose to take her home rather than accept a caravel. In February 1506 the Flor sailed for Lisbon with the São Gabriel, loaded with spices. Near Zanzibar she sprang a leak in her hull. The São Gabriel went on and reached Lisbon in December. The Flor limped to Mozambique Island, where repairs, sickness, and contrary winds held her for 8 months or more. In February 1507 the fleet of Tristão da Cunha found her there. His crews finished the repairs, her cargo went home in another ship, and the Flor sailed on with Cunha toward the Red Sea. Why it matters: Almeida's forts at Kilwa, Anjediva, Cannanore, and Cochin were the start of Portugal's chain of bases in the Indian Ocean. The Flor de la Mar would serve there for 5 more years. #flordelamar #franciscodealmeida #portuguesehistory #history #maps
