MEET SIDNEY | PART 1: THE EVALUATION 2/2 Sidney is a 5-year-old Australian Cattle Dog with some serious behavioral issues. Typically, when I schedule a behavioral evaluation, I have weeks to prepare and gather information about the dog I’m going to be working with. This time, I had less than an hour. My colleague Sheldon at @CentralTexasDogTrainer reached out with an urgent referral. Sidney’s owner was on his way to drop her off for a training program when things took an unexpected turn. While stopped in an HEB parking lot, Sidney bit someone on the shoulder who was walking past the vehicle’s open window. Recognizing that Sidney’s behavioral issues were outside the scope of what he was comfortable handling, Sheldon referred her to me. With less than an hour to prepare, I got ready for Sidney’s arrival, and let’s just say she didn’t disappoint. In my years of evaluating dogs with severe behavioral issues, I have never experienced more bite attempts in a single evaluation than I did with Sidney. But context matters. Recognizing the circumstances, the variables at play, and Sidney’s state of mind, I made the decision to exercise patience rather than fully correct every bite attempt. My objective during this evaluation wasn’t to immediately stop the behavior. It was to understand what was motivating it so I could determine the most appropriate way to address it. Stay tuned for Part 2, where we begin addressing Sidney’s aggression and holding her accountable for her decisions. #DogTraining #dogtrainer #dogs #dogsoftiktok #dog
