@togetheruk3: WHEN DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS BECOME SUSPECTS 💔 Imagine finally finding the courage to report domestic abuse, only to find yourself being investigated or arrested by the very people you turned to for protection. This is a serious concern highlighted by a new investigation published by openDemocracy on 22 October 2026. The investigation found that, out of 492 arrests of women suspected of coercive or controlling behaviour, 248 involved women who had also been identified as potential domestic abuse victims. This does not mean that all these women were wrongly arrested. But it raises serious questions about whether the police are always recognising the difference between a victim and a perpetrator. Domestic abuse is not always physical violence. It can involve manipulation, threats, intimidation, financial control and psychological abuse. Some perpetrators may even make counter-allegations against their victims, using the police and justice system as another way to maintain control. And that is what worries me most. We spend so much time encouraging victims to speak up, report abuse and ask for help. But what happens when they finally do? What happens when the person they are trying to escape accuses them of being the abuser? What happens when the police fail to recognise the history of coercion and control? A victim should never be wrongly treated as a perpetrator simply because an abuser knows how to manipulate the system. Of course, every allegation must be investigated fairly. But that investigation must consider the full circumstances, including patterns of abuse and previous reports. We need better recognition of coercive control, stronger safeguarding and proper investigations that distinguish between perpetrators and victims. Because every time the system fails to identify a genuine victim, it risks leaving that person exposed to further abuse. How can we encourage victims to report domestic abuse if they are afraid they might end up being arrested themselves? Victims deserve protection, not further trauma. 💔 ❤️ If you believe victims should be properly protected and every allegation investigated fairly, please share this message. I didn’t call the cops twice bc I knew he would find a way to turn it on me. He was always protected, Not me! The last time he almost killed me. They never protected me or my child.

I know this to well. It is a sad cycle leading to woman taking thier own lives or at the hands of an Abuser. Are wants for protection is unfair, We live trying to protect ourselves and our families which results in serious decisions a mother can make for the safety of her own children but can feel like abandonment when she is protecting her daughters. His actions over me will cause them harm if I allow him around them. My healing is to protect my children from abuse even when it doesn't feel fair.

Just gather the evidence ladies , writte down everything with date, time, we have AI not to help us with law but to help us to put in order without emotions what really happened. Timetables, chronologies , patterns. Then request SAR to fix the administrative notes. I know very well how I was burned by one abuser but life turns on our favour when we ready to learn how to really defend ourselves. No accusations, what’s most important to us. ♥️

It’s so wrong on so many levels. 💔 Victims of domestic abuse deserve to be recognised, heard and protected, not criminalised when they’re already living through trauma. The system needs to do better at identifying who needs protection and who is causing the harm. No victim should be failed like this. 💜

I was arrested for stalking and causing distress for speaking out after 12 years. Bailed for 9 months until nfa.
Abuser/ex took me to family court instead of civil court so he could claim legal aid. I had to self fund.
Him and his friends had been stalking me online and irl for 12 years because I gave evidence against him in a raoe trial.
District Judge sided with all his lies about me despite admitting there was abuse in the past

But when the abuser who abused mental or emotional and they created false narrative, the cops doesn't arrested the victim. Especially when they don't each other. The people make drama, the cops knows.

I had to bring up Gabby Petito last time they were called out by my ex. He refused to give me son back to me. I asked politely several times. When I became upset, he got his phone out and started recording… then called the police. The police ended up telling me I needed to go to the DV renter

This happened to me. He hasn’t stopped abusing me since I escaped. Police who wrongfully arrest need to be fired. This system needs to be corrected.

It’s all about reactive abuse the abuser pushes the victim to the point where they snap or react… Then the victim is now the problem 😡
