@novawithtrent: Before Skyline, this part of Bailey’s Crossroads was home to Washington–Virginia Airport. It closed in 1970. A Nextdoor neighbor shared these aerials with me. The roads are still recognizable, but look at how much changed around them. Swipe from the airport to the later Skyline view. My dad learned to fly a plane nd got his private pilot’s license at Bailey’s Crossroads. Living in Alexandria had a true suburban feel in the 70’s. Hate it now.

@penguin.partytime: The Burke and Herbert bank was there and sat at the end of the runway so it needed a little red light on the roof to make it visible to pilots. That red light is STILL there and you can see it any time you drive by.

There’s Burke and Herbert on seminary Road right near there that still has the red warning light on it from when the airport was open. I don’t know what the building was when the airport was open, but it still exist.
