It’s like the lights are on, but nobody’s home. And I’m only now realizing that I was trained to be that way. To be nothing. Be boring. Don’t stand out. Don’t be different. Don’t question anything. Don’t think for yourself. Stay completely disconnected from who you really are. Because if I never learned to think for myself, I might never wake up and realize I was raised in a cult. And that’s exactly what happened. I was literally raised in a cult. Now, as an adult, I’m having to figure out things most people get to discover naturally as they grow up. What do I actually like? Who am I when nobody is telling me who to be? What do I believe? What are MY values, not the ones I was taught I had to have? It’s been such a painful, confusing, and sometimes beautiful journey of getting to know myself for the very first time. And I honestly don’t know if that journey will ever end. Maybe discovering who I am is something I’ll spend the rest of my life doing.
