@historicaltidbits: ⚠️ They Illegally Captured Chief Osceola ⚠️ Tracking the Second Seminole War from St. Augustine down to Brevard County in late 1837. Following Chief Osceola's illegal capture in October under a broken flag of truce, General Joseph Hernandez marched his troops through the Merritt Island marsh in November. By December, a high-stakes prison break led by Wild Cat unfolded back at Fort Marion. #FloridaHistory #SeminoleWars #NativeHistory #brevardcounty #LearnHistoryonTikTok

Later Dr. Frederick Weedon removed Osceola’s head upon his death, and a death mask was maid. Weedon kept the head, which eventually ended up in a medical museum in New York.
The head is believed to have been destroyed in a museum fire in 1866. The death mask survived and is preserved at the Smithsonian Institution.
