#additivemanufacturing #3dprinting #imprimante3d #impression3d #3dprinters
The bulk still provides strength even if it doesn’t hold most of the weight

Engineer: the computer said we didn't need the extra material :)

Forces in the real world are not exactly as we design. Be prepared for some unexpected forces. Even for someone using a pry bar. or a bloody hammer because they're trying to replace this part or something nearby.

yeah so your telling me taking away material wouldnt then change the results of the stress test without the excess material that supports the material under stress... righttt

unless those parts are getting 3D printed that's more expensive because mills still have to remove all that material from the block. and it still gets wasted.

this is super useful for things where every gram counts. F1 cars, race bikes, &c. Structural durability isn't as important. as the budget is there to replace the part more often.

yes yes there's so much wrong with this, but it could be really cool for 3d printed parts where every gram matters.
definitely has it's usecase

Doesn't this just add more manufacturing time? To remove material with a mill or laser table. Just leave the flange be square.

the stress only is in the areas where is it when you first measured and scanned it because of the "excess" material, remove that "excess" material and now your stress spots have changed

I ran a little experiment with loadbearing. Removing everything that’s not under pressure changes the location and intensity of the pressure.

now do the simulation on a removed material one, you'll see the stress is much higher
