Tran Quoc pagoda was built in the year 541 during the 6th century under the reign of Emperor Ly Nam De - the Anterior Ly Dynasty. Initial named Khai Quoc Pagoda meaning "Founding the Nation", it was originally located on the banks of the Red River. Due to the riverbank erosion, the pagoda was removed to it's current location on Kim Nguu Islet in West Lake in 1615 and was later renamed Tran Quoc - meaning "Protecting the Fatherland" during the late 17th century.
