As a local on Nantucket, yes the deer population is HUGE!! We have extended hunting season to help with that not long but I do believe it’s extended. I believe there’s also a program that you can donate the deer to the local food pantry/ food program that help feed many families.

Many here reading this will know this of course, but Nantucket is the perfect example of why the govt organizes hunting to the extent they do. They NEED a regular body of annual dear hunters, they honestly need more. Deer hunters perform, at little cost to the govt., a time-consuming skilled conservation task that would otherwise cost a FORTUNE to organize. When you don’t have that body of hunters, the deer population goes nuclear like it has in Nantucket.

125/sq mile isnt alot of deer. The problem is 50k-80k people on that island.

I work for a guy in NJ who asked me to go up and do this for him on his place up there. i looked into it. I couldn't find how to get a non resident license for this year.

Hell, I used to sell hogs to Cuban guy in Florida $45 apiece. I don’t think we had to do a court amount same with the deer but the deer were $65 apiece.

yet we still cant hunt in MA on sunday.. if they wanted the problem solved, open up Sundays extend the season into February, and allow shotgun all season.. theres also only a few places to hunt on Nantucket with houses as close as they are.

My husband did a ‘control’ hunt(bow hunting) in Connecticut(15-20yrs ago). He didn’t get paid but a lot of people were happy getting venison for a Christmas present🦌. I think he got 15-18 the 1st yr. He had residents stop him and ask him to please hunt on their property. He saw so many deer dead from sickness or ‘starvation’. This was back when Lyme disease was rampant, 60 Minutes did an episode on it.
