The performance piece
The performance piece "Rest Energy" (1980) is one of the most iconic works by the Serbian artist Marina Abramović and her then-partner, the German artist Ulay (Uwe Laysiepen). This performance was part of their collaborative exploration into relationships and the limits of physical and psychological endurance. For precisely four minutes and ten seconds, Abramović and Ulay stood facing each other, dressed in simple white shirts, with a drawn bow and arrow positioned between them. Marina held the bow, while Ulay held the string and a ready-nocked arrow was pointed directly at her heart. The tension of the bow was maintained purely by the weight of their bodies, as they both leaned back to create the necessary tautness. To heighten the drama and vulnerability, the artists had microphones attached to their hearts, and the video documentation of the piece includes the sound of their heartbeats accelerating, highlighting the real physical and emotional danger. Essentially, Abramović placed her life completely in Ulay's hands, as any mistake, lapse in concentration, or fatigue on his part would result in the arrow being released.
