I had a client, an eldest daughter who works in a male-dominated industry and goes toe-to-toe with grown men all day, who met a man who could out-man her. Tall, worldly, no social media presence, and she was incredibly playful around him. A handful of dates in, he went overseas for two weeks to close a deal, told her he’d be less responsive with the time difference, and was still warm when he texted. Those two weeks felt like an eternity, and she found herself screenshotting their texts into AI. She came to me and said, I’m never like this at work, I know he’s being a green flag, and I don’t want to mess this up. Her pattern was finding safety through being one step ahead, because somewhere in there is a little girl who thinks she’s one misunderstanding away from people giving up on her.
