@thenatureparty: "A little privacy, please!" 😎 🎥 from @ witchu__ (IG) Imagine stepping into your backyard at night and finding this little face staring back at you. It's a common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula), one of Australia's most familiar nocturnal marsupials. This particular encounter was filmed in Tasmania, where brushtails tend to be larger, with thicker, darker fur than their mainland relatives, an adaptation to the island's cooler climate. And behind those enormous eyes and innocent expressions is an animal with some fascinating biological quirks. For starters, female brushtail possums give birth after a pregnancy lasting just 17 days. Their newborn, called a joey, is tiny, hairless, and barely developed. It immediately crawls into its mother's pouch, where it spends roughly five months growing before graduating to riding around on her back. They also have quite the vocal repertoire, ranging from hisses and screeches to deep, guttural growls and strange coughing sounds. Their nighttime territorial disputes can sound downright terrifying, especially when you have no idea what's making all that noise. There's also an interesting conservation story behind these furry little troublemakers. In their native Australia, brushtail possums are protected under wildlife laws, although permitted population control is sometimes necessary. But across the Tasman Sea in New Zealand, where they were introduced during the 1800s to establish a fur trade, they've become one of the country's most destructive invasive mammals. Their appetites for native vegetation, flowers, and even bird eggs have taken a serious toll on ecosystems that evolved without them. It's a good example of how the same animal can belong perfectly well in one environment while wreaking havoc in another. As for this backyard visitor? He's just tryin' to chill. 🌲 Love nature?
