A weekly report from your favourite single mother. In my teens and early 20s I dealt with depression, unmedicated because in high school I went to a phsychologist and she said that she just thought it was a phase (which it wasn’t) but as I got older I decided to not get medicated and deal with my depression in other ways. In my late 20s I was able to overcome my depression, or so I thought. Recently it started to come back in a way. I started to feel this numbness, I was struggling to talk to friends or I would cancel plans because I didn’t feel like I had the energy for it. I was starting to worry about it because I’m not sure it could even be considered postpartum depression if I’m already over a year postpartum. So the worst-best day happened and at first I thought “this is the worst day, it’s been such a waste of time” because I’d gone into town to get some legal stuff done and had to deal with all the bureaucracy and in the end it was all for naught cause nothing got done due to a mistake a policeman made. On top of that I had to sit next to a man who I had complete opposite views with but and I tried politely disagreeing with him, which he interpreted as us having chemistry because he started to insinuate that he wanted to spend more time together and asked for my number. And after I made it very clear to him that I wasn’t interested in him (romantically or otherwise), he still pushed by saying “I think opposites attract” I responded “well, I’m not attracted” he responded “I don’t mind that you’re not catholic” and I responded “well, I mind that you’re homophobic” he then got called up cause he was next in line. Then when I got called up he handed me a paper with his name and number on it and said “incase you change your mind” and I responded “I won’t, don’t worry.” So I felt defeated and it also meant that I had to sit in peak traffic going home. But while I sat in traffic, I thought about my day and how if I hadn’t chosen that day to go into town I would’ve missed the event happening at the Corner Store and wouldn’t have had the conversations I had. And then if I hadn’t been sent to the police station to certify papers, I wouldn’t have bumped into Alex and we wouldn’t have had lunch together (where we got our orange juice for free just cause). And I still got home in time to get dressed and go back to the city to have the best dinner. Where I had really beautiful conversations. And so really it was the best day ever, and the day reminded me to reframe the way I look at each day. And while it’s early days, I will say that I’ve been feeling a lot more positive and lighter #snippetsofsuburbia
