my truth: I was harassed by adult men when I was a young 9-13 year old girl. then I gained weight and it stopped. then I lost a bunch of weight at 18 and suddenly I got the male gaze again. now I'm 42 and overweight and don't wear makeup and do nothing to make myself attractive. I have had a few people hit on me but nothing crazy. I wear my weight like a shield at the moment.

I saw a comment on one of the women’s Nike run that said “Not all men are dangerous, but all women are in danger.” It’s sad that this is our reality and instead of holding each other accountable (i’m willing to pretend that they’re one of the good ones for three seconds) they would rather find ways to blame us.

I just relocated across the country to go back to school to pursue my dreams. My older male teacher started making inappropriate sexual jokes and harassing me from day 1. I felt so ashamed, degraded and uncomfortable. I almost blamed myself for the harassment. 2 weeks in, it got bad so my friend convinced me to tell the principal who luckily had him fired immediately. I am so glad I was heard, but I realize not everyone feels safe to speak up and not everyone is believed or taken seriously. We are all Jane Doe.
