The Berlin Conference was an important international meeting that took place in Berlin, Germany, between November 1884 and February 1885. It was organized by the German Chancellor, Otto von Bismarck, and its main purpose was to establish rules for European colonization and trade in Africa. Although the conference is often associated with the division of Africa, European powers had already begun expanding their influence across the continent before it took place. By the beginning of the twentieth century, almost all of Africa had been colonized, with Ethiopia and Liberia remaining the main independent states. The consequences for African societies were enormous. Colonial governments frequently exploited natural resources, imposed foreign political systems, and disrupted existing economic and social structures. Artificial borders divided some ethnic communities while bringing different populations under the same administration. Resistance movements emerged throughout the continent, but many were defeated through military force. In conclusion, the Berlin Conference was a turning point in the history of European imperialism. Although its official purpose was to regulate competition and prevent conflicts between European powers, it accelerated the colonization of Africa.
