15-20 for a young patient with a glass chest and no pathology. 30-45 minutes for a standard good echo. 45-60 minutes if there’s lots of pathology needing more attention.

another thing to note, not every institution has the same image protocol so that could also affect scan time as well!!

I’ve always been a fast scanner. I follow my protocol and if I see pathology, I interrogate as I see fit.

Agree with all of that! Slower doesn’t automatically mean better image quality either though

As a Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer with 23 years of experience, I strongly disagree with scanning echocardiograms in 15minute. Unless a patient has excellent acoustic windows and no significant cardiac abnormalities, 15 minutes is simply not enough time to perform a thorough, high quality examination. Even 20 minutes can be challenging, depending on the complexity of the patient. Over the years, I have witnessed far too many rushed echocardiograms where important details were overlooked and essential imaging protocols were compromised. Unfortunately, some sonographers cut corners to keep up with unrealistic schedules, and I have seen this happen repeatedly, particularly in physician offices where these practices are often accepted. Echocardiography is not just about obtaining a few images and moving on to the next patient. It’s about performing a comprehensive diagnostic examination, recognizing subtle abnormalities, and ensuring that interpreting physicians have the information they need to make accurate clinical decisions. What concerns me most is how much this profession has shifted from quality to quantity. Patient care should never be sacrificed for productivity. We are diagnostic medical professionals, and our work directly impacts patient outcomes. A fast echo does not necessarily mean a good echo, and missing a significant finding can have serious consequences.

I think also part of it is how fast you are working the machine too. And the protocol length at each facility.

10 years echo. I knew I liked you. I saw video talking about fast scanners and I don’t think it’s fair. I’m a fast scanner but also very thorough and get complimented on my studies often. It just depends on the person. I’m also a fast walker, talker, and everything elser lol

Quick echos aren’t always bad echos just like slow echos aren’t always good echos!

Been doing US for over 32 years…echo, vascular. Depends on the patient and what they “bring” me. Work at a critical access/rural hospital. Get the best I can. Take your time and get what you’re able. Think of everyone as family, and that’s how I treat everyone. 30 minutes is a textbook patient, which I see in a small percentage where I work now.

We have no choice in our hospital. Outpatient slots are 45mins for scan and signed off report so have to scan in 20mins max really regardless of pathology

Working in a level 1 trauma hospital conditioned me to scan quickly but extremely thorough! Went from very slow to a fast scanner over the years 😇 thankful for the experience!

I’m in my third rotation and during 2nd rotation I got down to 21-25 mins where a lot of the time it’s like 1-2 images that the preceptor has to retake. If there’s pathology like AS/ MR it takes me up to 40 mins

I’m definitely more slower and I just graduated and got my registry a little over a month ago. Some people, ive seen, tend to put you in a position where you might feel bad bc you’re either slow or fast. The end goal at the end of the day is the patient… we pray that the images are always in favor of the patient. So, it saddens me when people put other new grads or people in the field longer down

Color compare doesn’t save time imo. Frame rate is compromised with color on and therefore 2d without color is still required where I work. Ai saves time when accurate and these pioneers and newer epiqs are getting better with it. I do agree everyone scans at their own pace. Some scan fast and crappy and some are fast good, definitely depends but the slow ones are usually reliable but can put you behind 😳

I’ve been scanning for 3 and a half years now and average 25-35 minutes, sometimes more sometimes less. I’m a quick and thorough scanner but we’ve got a long protocol.

Yeah I average 30-45 min because my patient population is older , but if it’s a young patient , good windows, no pathology that’s easily a 15-20 min echo. Also I try also not to take too long to save my shoulder!!

Yes!! Echo is sooooo dependent on the patient!!! The generalization of fast scanners never being thorough is incorrect. Excellent windows and in-depth knowledge of knobology can make someone very efficient. I completely agree the concern of prioritizing a complete and correct exam, but I think the discourse and quality assumptions around this coming from some sonographers is a bit much…

If you can run a mile in 5 minutes that doesn’t mean you can run 10 miles in 50 minutes every day Monday through Friday… at some point ur going to break down and pacing yourself doesnt only provide a better service but longevity for sonographers… remember that!

As a traveling cardiac sonographer for four years and was doing echoes for 12 years as a permanent staffer. First, each echo lab is different and certain regions of the country you see certain pathologies and EACH PATIENT AND CASE IS DIFFERENT. Some echoes may take not very long to perform as other with worsen pathologies make take longer. Some times when you are labeled “fast” you get certain unfortunate burdens of the lab because you are quick. If you want to focus on numbers just try your best to get the whatever your lab daily criteria. Some lab you will be in structural heart or TEEs all day. It depends on your lab and your willingness to care and give your patients the best care. Patients don’t care how fast you. You’ll always get better whenever you are constantly and having more trust in yourself. God bless

I scan 15 patients a day 30 minutes per patient good quality ASE guidelines with strain, doesn’t matter if they have aortic stenosis, mitral stenosis, regurg on every valve prosthetic you name it. I’m still getting a good quality Echo in the timeframe. Some people are just quicker than others. You know what kind of picture you’re gonna get the second you put the probe down when you’ve been doing it for 20 years you just know yes there are a lot of variables. You’re good you’re good.
