if its got concrete on the side it was a cess pit, if it was soil held back by a frame its a soak hole, it gives water place to drain to when the soil.is wet , tonstop water pooling and possibly flooding above ground. modern alternatives would be soak away crates which are buried. was there concrete ontop. as you may have issues since you filled it, but you will find out iver winter. best of luck
