We are currently in Kyoto and did a couple days in Tokyo and will head back there for more. It’s WAY warmer than anticipated. Like my husband is in shorts and I am in thin pants and longsleeves or tees. Same with my 20 month old. I’ve found Kyoto a lot less kid friendly because it’s more hilly and almost no playgrounds. Tokyo has playgrounds but a lot are on rooftops so you have to check Google Maps for them. My fav places so far with a kid have been Tokyo: team lab planets (need a reservation), shinjuku kids playground, senso-ji temple (he could run around here), Ginza area has good shopping including itoya for stationary and a few rooftop playgrounds (like on Ginza six building). If you like matcha my favs were the matcha stand and cloud club was okay but overhyped for the line. Kyoto: MUST eat at sugari for ramen and get the yuzu noodles, le labo cafe was a good vibe, actual Kyoto was good coffee and matcha and has a cool window/patio you can watch the trains go by (great toddler activity), Taku sando was on our list but we couldn’t get in and they sell out quick, the ace hotel is in a fun little mall with beams. General tips: the subways do have elevators but we had to carry our stroller a lot, highly recommend the bugaboo butterfly because it also came with a rain cover which has been essential because it rained a lot in Kyoto. Every hotel we’ve stayed at has had umbrellas to borrow which was great. In Kyoto id do the carrier if you can if you’re going to go over to the arabica area because it’s hilly and stairs and hectic.
