@cutzov: PMC Wagner (often referred to simply as the Wagner Group) is a Russian private military company (PMC) that has operated as a shadowy instrument of Russian foreign policy. It is not a legally registered entity in Russia, where private military companies are officially illegal, but it has been used to advance Moscow's interests abroad while providing plausible deniability . 📜 Origins and Leadership · Founders: It was founded in 2014 by Dmitry Utkin, a former Russian military intelligence (GRU) officer whose radio call sign was "Wagner" . Yevgeny Prigozhin, a businessman and confidant of Vladimir Putin, provided the financial backing and later became its public face . · The Name: The name is an homage to the German composer Richard Wagner, reportedly reflecting Utkin's far-right sympathies . 🌍 Global Operations Wagner has been deployed to numerous conflict zones, often to protect Russian economic or geopolitical interests: · Ukraine: It first appeared in 2014 in the Donbas and played a major role in the 2022 invasion, most notably in the brutal battle for Bakhmut, where it relied heavily on recruited prisoners . · Africa & Middle East: The group has been active in Syria, Libya, Mali, the Central African Republic, and Sudan, often securing mining concessions (gold, diamonds) in exchange for military support to local governments . ⚔️ Mutiny and Aftermath · The June 2023 Mutiny: After months of public feuding with the Russian Defense Ministry over supplies and credit, Prigozhin led his forces in an armed rebellion. They seized the city of Rostov-on-Don and marched toward Moscow before standing down . · Prigozhin's Death: Two months later, in August 2023, Prigozhin and Utkin died in a plane crash in Russia, widely seen as an assassination . · Current Status: Following the mutiny and Prigozhin's death, the Kremlin moved to absorb Wagner's fighters into the regular military or other state-controlled structures. Its future as an independent entity remains uncertain, though some elements may continue operating under new arrangements. #ukraine #рекомандации #tud #war #recommendations
