in my years as content creator, I have been met with many of these offers before - from lip fillers to bariatric surgery, and as someone who has a very long history with body image issues, body dysmorphia relating to both weight and struggles around a body changed through disability, I would be lying if I said I am immune to the temptation of a ‘quick fix’. In fact, there have been many times where one of these emails has led to a stomach drop moment in which my negative self beliefs have been affirmed by the offers on the screen. Of course, I believe people should have autonomy over their own bodies and what they choose to do with them. However, I fear we may have reached a rather dystopian point in the beauty industry when women are being offered thousands of pounds worth of cosmetic surgery in exchange for encouraging other women to have it too. The idea that people are being financially incentivised to promote unnecessary surgical procedures to an audience of women who might never have considered changing those parts of themselves otherwise. This can also be exceptionally predatory towards the influencer involved, who may be trying to keep up with beauty standards in the media, or may have been singled out by companies specifically BECAUSE they have vocalised their insecurities online. We already live in a world where practically every inch of the female body is scrutinised, criticised, commercialised and presented as something that could be improved. And when you’ve finally ‘fixed’ everything you were told was wrong with you, there’ll inevitably be a new beauty standard to aspire to. Convenient, isn’t it? I don’t think there’s anything inherently empowering about having cosmetic surgery, just as I don’t think there’s anything inherently empowering about refusing it. The empowerment is in having the freedom to make that decision for yourself, without being made to feel inadequate in the first place. So whilst I fully support women doing whatever makes them happy in their own bodies, I’d rather not make a living out of telling them that those bodies need changing. Anyway, here’s me in a bedsheet. x
