NASA's Opportunity rover bounced 26 times across Mars before it rolled to a stop inside a crater. On January 25, 2004 (UTC), NASA's Opportunity rover arrived at Mars in one of the most dramatic landings ever attempted. The spacecraft hit the atmosphere at about 12,000 miles per hour. Within roughly six minutes, it had to slow down, deploy a parachute, fire rockets, and inflate giant airbags around the rover, all without any help from Earth. Then came the bounce. Wrapped in its airbags, Opportunity hit the surface and bounced about 26 times, rolling across the Martian plain for roughly 1,000 feet before it finally stopped. Remarkably, it came to rest inside a small crater called Eagle Crater, about 72 feet wide. NASA's team joked that it was like a hole in one, and the landing site was exactly where scientists had hoped to explore. Almost right away, the rover's location paid off. Rock outcrops in the crater walls gave Opportunity direct access to layers of ancient rock. Within weeks, it found chemical evidence that liquid water had once soaked this part of Mars, including small round mineral pebbles nicknamed "blueberries." It was some of the strongest proof then that Mars was once wet. Opportunity was only built to last 90 Martian days. Instead, it kept going for more than 14 years. The rover drove about 28 miles, which is the length of a marathon, before a huge dust storm blocked its sunlight in June 2018 and it stopped responding. NASA declared the mission over in February 2019. Its twin, Spirit, landed three weeks earlier on the other side of the planet using the same method. Together, they changed how we see the Red Planet.
