@justkinguche: His name was Michael Scott Speicher. He was 33 years old. A husband. A father of two. And a U.S. Navy pilot whose final mission would leave his family searching for answers for nearly two decades. January 17, 1991. Operation Desert Storm had just begun and Scott was flying an F/A-18 Hornet from the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. His mission took him deep into Iraqi airspace. It was the opening night of a war that would soon dominate television screens across America. But Scott would never return to his ship. His aircraft went down over western Iraq. He became the first American combat casualty of Desert Storm. And almost immediately, a painful mystery began. Nobody could confirm exactly what had happened to him. Had he survived? Had he escaped into the desert? Could he have been captured? Back home, his family faced something almost impossible. They had lost contact with someone they loved. But they didn't have the certainty of knowing his fate. In May 1991, the Navy officially declared Scott deceased, with his rem@ins unrecovered. For most families, that declaration would have marked the beginning of mourning. But Scott's story refused to end there. In 1993, investigators located the wreckage of his aircraft. Something about the evidence raised questions. The position of the cockpit canopy suggested he might have attempted to escape. That possibility changed everything. Perhaps Scott had survived the initial incident. Perhaps he had been taken somewhere. Perhaps there was still a chance. Years passed. Investigators examined satellite photographs. Followed witness accounts. Studied possible clues. And searched for evidence of where he might have gone. Some leads appeared promising. Others eventually collapsed under scrutiny. In 2001, Scott's official status was changed to missing in action. In 2002, it changed again to missing or captured. For his family, uncertainty continued. Scott's children were growing older. Birthdays passed. Holidays came and went. The years they should have shared with their father could never be returned. Meanwhile, the search continued. After American forces entered Iraq in 2003, investigators pursued additional leads. They examined possible prison connections. Questioned witnesses and searched locations associated with the missing pilot. But none of the clues established that Scott had survived. Then came 2009. Eighteen years after his disappearance, an Iraqi civilian provided information about people who remembered the original crash. The trail led American Marines into the desert of Anbar province. Local witnesses described how Bedouins had found the pilot and bur!ed him near the crash area. The Marines searched. And finally, they found human remains. Military specialists compared the evidence with Scott's dental records. It was a match. Additional DNA testing confirmed his identity. On August 2, 2009, the Department of Defense announced that Michael Scott Speicher had finally been found. The long mystery was over. Investigators concluded that he most likely had not survived the original crash. There was no verified evidence that he had spent years in captivity. For the family, the discovery brought an answer they had waited 18 years to receive. On August 13, Scott's rem@ins returned to Jacksonville, Florida. The following day, he was laid to rest at Jacksonville Memory Gardens in Orange Park. He had left home as a 33-year-old Navy pilot. An entire generation had watched the years pass. But the search for him had never been abandoned. Today, his memory is honored through military memorials and a restored F/A-18 bearing his name in Jacksonville. Scott Speicher never made it home from his final mission. Rest easy, Scott.🕊️🙏

Whoever buried him did so out of respect for his life and I find that to be so empathetic and human.
