I pick locks as a hobby and they do it wrong for no reason. For example I've seen scenes where they use two picks instead of a tensioner and pick. It drives me crazy. it's such an easy thing to get right.

Some simple locks can be picked with 1 tool. I've done it with small luggage locks (my own, not someone else's).

You can absolutely use one tool to open a lock if the tail end is not shielded. you don't have to manipulate the cylinder at all. would it work on most modern locks? no. would it work on some? absolutely.

A bobby pin has two prongs, though. The unit that I was in the military trained me on how to open locks with hairpins, and I guarantee you it can be done, and it can be done very quickly.

Because who wants to watch someone try to pick a lock for 5 mins? When you can show them use a gum wrapper and get in under 2 seconds.

You absolutely can open a lock with a hairpin. A little wafer lock like the example of the desk drawer in the video can very often be jiggled with a very simple rake. There are a bunch of locks which have bad designs or bad tolerances and are single-tool opens. Anything with a over-deep bible which is vulnerable to overpicking or a comb pick, as well as many poorly made padlocks with no shielding at the back of the keyway where the specialized tool to open them basically looks like a straightened paperclip with a little hook at the end. Even some pin tumblers (normal door locks) with bad tolerances can occasionally be single-tool opened by applying a gentle twist while raking. However, for the majority of "normal" pin tumbler or even disk detainer locks, single-pin picking, raking, or bumping is a two-tool or two-part-tool job.

Before the internet, it was considered bad to show how things really work if they can be used for nefarious purposes. I once watched a movie where they used hydrochlorothiazide to make someone appear dead to break them out of prison. That's just a mild diuretic.

picking locks is actually ridiculously easy on most locks. so much so it makes me wonder what the purpose of them is if it takes me 30 seconds to pop open common lock brands

Depends on the lock. Handcuffs used to be picked with a single bent wire. Desk and cabinet locks are pretty easy.

@McNallyOfficial | Lock Picking got sued over picking an "unpickable" lock with a piece of soda can, and opening masterlocks with other masterlocks.
