🐻‍❄️Arctic foxes are not afraid of humans. 🥹 Along Alaska’s Dalton Highway, they will sometimes wander within just a few feet of you. There is nowhere else in North America where you can so reliably see wild Arctic foxes from a place accessible by road. And honestly, the Dalton Highway is one of the greatest road trips on Earth. In summer, give yourself at least three days to drive from Fairbanks to Deadhorse, but a full week is better. The road is packed with incredible campsites, views of the Brooks Range and Gates of the Arctic National Park, and some of the most unique landscapes you will ever see. My favorite stops are Finger Mountain, Atigun Pass, the highest highway pass in Alaska, and Galbraith Lake on the far side. But the North Slope tundra is the real highlight. Once the trees disappear, the landscape becomes an endless open world that feels more like another planet than Alaska. Most people think the Dalton is an insane off-road route that only lifted trucks can survive. It is not. It is a well-maintained gravel highway that almost any car can drive in summer. Yes, even your Ferrari. Winter is even more spectacular, but it is serious. Temperatures regularly fall below -40°, so you need to keep your engine running, know your vehicle can cold-start in extreme cold, or plug in a block heater. You also need a cabin heater, heated tent, or another sleeping setup you genuinely trust. The Dalton is still an active trucking route, so you will rarely go more than an hour without seeing someone. You should be fully self-sufficient, but you are not as isolated as the landscape makes you feel. You can often find lodging and engine plug-ins at the Yukon River, Coldfoot, and Deadhorse, making a winter trip surprisingly doable without camping. I would still take three days to a week, but if you only want to experience the North Slope, Arctic foxes, and aurora, you can make Deadhorse one very long day or spend the night there. Save this for the greatest Alaska road trip you have probably never considered, and send it to the person crazy enough to drive to the Arctic with you. ❄️ . . #alaska #wildlife #cuteanimals #arcticfox #fox
