@mollyburkeofficial: Guide dogs are highly trained but at the end of the day, they are still just dogs! On the What It’s Really Like podcast I did a two part series on the life of a guide dog. Part one was with a volunteer puppy raiser and part two was with a guide dog trainer. You can listen to both episodes now! It’s available on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Amazon Music, and more!
I tell people still "he's my service dog, but remember he's still a dog". people are sometimes shocked when he isn't absolutely perfect. The one that seems to shock people the most is that when he's at home and not in his vest he will behave differently including barking or expressing himself more, but I have no expectation for him to not express himself at home. I have to tell people in my home "he is different when he's in his vest, but I'm not forcing him to have that level of self restraint 24/7"

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to explain to others that even professionally trained guide dogs make mistakes and can develop fears, like any other animal. A month after I brought Peter home from GDF, I rolled my ankle going down the stairs and Peter wasn’t at fault, he was guiding me down the stairs perfectly but I stepped wrong, resulting in a broken foot. He scared himself and refused to guide me downstairs for months, but with the right encouragement and help from his program, he regained his confidence and guides me downstairs just like he did before.

Your work is truly inspiring, Molly! ❤️I strongly believe that disability should never be a barrier to living a meaningful and independent life. Through my humanitarian work, I have seen how awareness and inclusion can make a real difference. Thank you for using your voice to inspire others!

i work at a vet and recently we had a guide dog come in for an appointment. i took the dog out of the room to weigh and she was on a perfect loose leash and listened to my commands flawlessly. she was more polite than any dog i had ever met. and then she saw the treat bin and “guided” me right to it LOL

And like, even machines need maintenance or to recalibrate sometimes. When their door buttons & elevators are broken they often don’t care but a dog trainer is a problem apparently. 🙃

Yes! Mine dies not fare well in open-air shopping malls. He’s fine if it’s closed but in open ones he gets very confused, even if I know the way and I tell him so.

My service dog is good but she got spooked other day by someone like creeping up with head down so she only saw the top of the hat and I’m in grad school and this happened on our break in class and she jumped back all nervous and someone was like oh why she get spooked she a service dog. I’m like yeah a sd not a robot she can still get spooked every once in a blue moon. I get spooked all time so why would I expect my dog to never be spooked by smth

My service dog is afraid of heights. I’ve worked with him to the point where he is fine working and functioning but he still sometimes gets timid with stairs or walking next to balconies/railings. It’s a real work in progress but things happen and training is forever
