@seeingcoolplaces: George Washington liked to take baths here. So did a lot of other people; Berkeley Springs eventually became the country’s first spa destination. But George first came here before it was a resort, when he was 16, working for a surveying crew. He would’ve bathed in a pit like this, which has since been reconstructed to honor him, just in case you want to imagine what an adult George Washington would look like bathing. I certainly have. The warm mineral water of Berkeley Springs had been used by local indigenous people for centuries, and after Europeans arrived, the colonizers flocked to the springs for its supposed medicinal benefits. Washington was no different, returning frequently to the springs throughout his life, as well as sending ill family members there to treat their various ailments. He liked the baths so much, in fact, that he was among the first people to buy up land nearby, when the town of Bath was founded. Eventually, it became known as Berkeley Springs, and amenities like this bathhouse were built in the 19th century.
