Sometimes growing up is becoming the kind of woman your younger self needed. So here are 20 things I’d tell any younger woman. These are important lessons I learned the VERY hard way so here they are so you don’t have to. 1. Being “low maintenance” is not a virtue when it teaches people they can underpay, underlove, and under-support you. 2. Someone can be drawn to your light and still try to dim it once it starts illuminating their own insecurity. Some chase bright birds but don’t know what to do with them, so they’ll try and cage them. 3. Money is not shallow. Money is options. And options are freedom: options to leave situations that don’t serve you, chase dreams that fulfill you, and fund causes you care about. I call this my “fuck it” or alternatively “fuck you” fund. 4. There is nothing feminist about pretending you do not want money in a world that uses money to control women. 5. Do not confuse being nice with being good. Nice keeps the peace. Good tells the truth. 6. Being afraid to bring something up is already information. 7. Your standards will cost you relationships. That’s the point. Otherwise, they aren’t standards they are preferences. 8. Your anger is not always a problem to fix. Sometimes it is the part of you that loves you and still believes you deserve better. 9. You do not have to make your brilliance more palatable for people who are committed to underestimating you. Let them choke. 10. You will outgrow versions of yourself you once begged to become. 11. Your expertise does not become less real because a boss with more authority feels threatened by it. 12. Learn the numbers. Read the contract. Ask for more. Do not let politeness cost you thousands of dollars. 13. Do not mistake being indispensable for being valued. 14. Stop asking “what can I do so they like me back?” while chasing them. That’s not dating that’s self soothing. 15. The goal is not to be liked by everyone. The goal is to be undeniably true to yourself. That will cost you people and that’s okay. You’ll find your people. … #women #HealingJourney #lifelessons
