@ebrpd: Did you know rainbow trout were first scientifically described and named right here in the East Bay? These beautiful native fish have a fascinating life cycle, and protecting their habitat is part of the East Bay Regional Park District's ongoing work to preserve our nearby nature. Rainbow trout and steelhead trout are actually the same species! The difference is in how they live. Some spend their entire lives in freshwater creeks and streams, while others migrate to the ocean, where they physically transform to adapt to saltwater, growing larger and changing to a silvery color. These ocean-going trout are known as steelhead, and they eventually return to freshwater to spawn. Historically, native trout in East Bay waterways could migrate from freshwater streams all the way to the bay and back. Today, dams and other human-made changes to waterways have disrupted these migration routes, contributing to the decline of steelhead populations, which are federally protected as threatened in our region. Each year, the Park District conducts native fish surveys to monitor trout populations and assess habitat conditions. The information gathered helps our fisheries team better understand the health of local waterways and identify opportunities to protect these remarkable fish and their habitats. ‼️ Reminder: Native rainbow trout in spawning streams are strictly protected. Fishing is prohibited in East Bay Regional Park streams and creeks. For information about where you can fish in Regional Parks, visit ebparks.org/recreation/fishing.
