It doesn’t go back to childhood always either. Research shows that with a lot of abusive behavior it’s a reinforced belief system where they *do* hate you and don’t take accountability for themselves through that hate. The belief system is reinforced through the narratives from their community (especially mens hate of women). Not taking accountability works for them so they keep doing it. If you read the book “why do they do that” by Lundy Bancroft it’s very eye opening. Blaming it on their childhood is a manipulation tactic they often use to blame their bad behavior and only 20% of them were telling the truth about childhood abuse. So don’t waste your concern on them. Just step away.
