@archivedigitizing: Remembering Tom Skerritt (1933–2026). Tom Skerritt died on October 21, 2026, at the age of 93. To remember him, we're sharing a scene from Top Gun (1986), transferred from our original VHS copy of the movie. Skerritt played Commander Mike "Viper" Metcalf, one of the experienced officers responsible for training the Navy's fighter pilots. In this scene, he talks with Maverick, played by Tom Cruise, about Maverick's father and his military service. It's an important part of the movie because Maverick finally begins to learn more about what happened to his father. Skerritt began his film career in the early 1960s. Over the following decades, he appeared in a wide range of movies, including M*A*S*H (1970), Alien (1979), Steel Magnolias (1989), and A River Runs Through It (1992). He also starred in the CBS television drama Picket Fences, winning an Emmy Award in 1993 for his role as Sheriff Jimmy Brock. Before his acting career, Skerritt served in the U.S. Air Force. His military background is an interesting connection to Top Gun, even though the movie itself focuses on Navy pilots. Career sources: Associated Press, Television Academy, and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. 🌻 SOCIOLOGICAL DEEP-DIVE Top Gun was one of the major films of 1986, a time when videotape was changing how people watched movies at home. Instead of seeing a movie once in a theater or waiting for a television broadcast, families could rent or purchase a VHS copy and watch it repeatedly. The movie is remembered for its action, music, and fighter jets, but the relationship between Maverick and Viper is another important part of the story. Viper represents an older generation of military pilots whose experience helps shape the next generation. Forty years later, we're revisiting that performance through an original VHS recording. Skerritt's role is a reminder of how much the supporting actors contributed to some of the most recognizable movies of that period. ☕ ENJOYING THE ARCHIVE?
