🚩Testing of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, RDS-37, in 1955 The test took place on November 22, 1955. At 6:55 a.m., the bomb was loaded onto the aircraft, which took off at 8:34 a.m. Approximately 5–7 minutes after the detonation, the radioactive cloud reached an altitude of 13–14 kilometers. By that time, the diameter of the cloud’s "mushroom" had reached 25–30 kilometers. Observers, positioned 35 kilometers from the epicenter, lay on the ground wearing special protective eyewear. A commission tasked with determining the yield of the RDS-37 device concluded that the explosion released an energy equivalent to 1.6 megatons (Mt). This test was of historic significance, as it marked the first time a hydrogen bomb with a yield exceeding 1 Mt had been successfully dropped and detonated. However, the RDS-37 test also led to a number of tragic incidents. In the village of Malyye Akzhary, a three-year-old girl died when the ceiling of a residential building collapsed. In a staging area located 36 kilometers from the blast center, six soldiers from a security battalion were buried by earth when their dugout collapsed; one of them died from suffocation, while the others sustained minor contusions (an event also mentioned in the original newsreel footage). Shards of glass and debris from structures caused injuries and contusions to 26 residents from the village of Mayskoye, the Voroshilovgradsky state farm, the Stalin-Tuy and Semiyarskoye collective farms, as well as 16 residents of the city of Semipalatinsk (the latter is mentioned and shown in the actual newsreel footage). In the village of Semiyarskoye, the collapse of ceilings in specially designated shelters resulted in one woman sustaining a closed fracture of the femur, while two others suffered spinal contusions. The injured were transported by a test-site aircraft to the regional hospital in the city of Pavlodar for inpatient treatment. In the city of Semipalatinsk, three people sustained concussions. In total, varying degrees of structural damage were recorded in 59 settlements. Windows were blown out in homes within a radius of up to 200 km from the epicenter of the explosion; the total area of shattered glass reached 28,615 square meters. Three hours after the explosion, at distances ranging from 95 to 272 km from the epicenter, the cumulative dose—calculated until the complete decay of the radioactive material—in open areas ranged from 0.13 to 0.23 roentgens, with a radiation dose rate of 0.10 to 0.18 mR/h. Radiation levels were measured by aircraft at an altitude of 50 meters, 30 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes after the explosion; one hour post-detonation, at a distance of 25 km, the level was 0.02 R/h. #tests #nuclearweapons #RDS37
