It is kinda interesting that society sees boyfriends/girlfriends as inherently not a serious thing. If you said a close friend had died you’d likely get more understanding (though probably only an extra day or two rather than a week as it is for an immediate family member).

To be fair, 15-20 people are dying every semester. Policies should be clear, and professors should keep to whatever the syllabus policy is. But the extra comment about it only being a bf is absolutely unacceptable.
