We always tell ourselves the same lie: “Once I earn more, I’ll start giving.” We assume charity belongs strictly to those with overflowing bank accounts and endless surplus. But that is a subtle trap of the ego. In this clip, Shaykh Muhammad Metwally al-Sha’rawi ra strips away our favourite excuse. When Allah commands us to fulfil the rights of relatives, the needy, and the traveller (Surah Al-Isra 17:26), He never adds a condition that says “only if you are wealthy.” Look closely at the term Allah uses: Right (Haqq). It is not a favour. It is a divine right Allah placed inside the provision passing through your hands. Even if your income is tight and you are living paycheck to paycheck, the needy still hold a claim over whatever modest means you carry. However, Islam maintains perfect legal balance. The Prophet ﷺ clarified this when asked about the best form of charity: “The effort of one who has little, and begin with those for whom you are responsible” (Sunan Abi Dawud ). You must prioritise your household first (Nafaqah). Islam never asks you to leave your dependants destitute. But once essential needs are met, a restricted budget is not a valid reason to close your palm entirely. Allah commands: “Let the man whose resources are restricted spend according to what Allah has given him” (Surah At-Talaq 65:7). He praises those who share despite hardship: “And they give them preference over themselves, even though they were in privation” (Surah Al-Hashr 59:9). Allah does not measure total cash; He measures sacrifice. Giving five pounds when you only have fifty requires far greater faith than thousands given from a surplus. The Prophet ﷺ promised: “Charity does not decrease wealth” (Sahih Muslim ), urging us: “Guard yourselves against the Fire, even if it be with half a date” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1417). Cover your family’s needs, then split whatever small provision remains. Generosity is not the outcome of wealth…it is the seed that produces it. Save this post, share it with someone who needs this perspective, and follow for authentic spiritual guidance. #islamicknowledge #charityinislam #allahknowsbest #islamicrelief
