Beyond the silence Part3 Engfa untied the apron, folded it over the back of a chair and pressed a kiss to Charlotte's cheek. "Go and freshen up," Engfa murmured. "You smell like the office.Come back looking like my girlfriend." Charlotte laughed softly and disappeared into the bathroom. When Charlotte came back, her face was scrubbed fresh and she wore a soft blue dress that fell just below her knees. She found Engfa already seated, one hand around the stem of a wine glass, the other on her phone. She glanced up at Charlotte, set the phone face down on the table and rose to pull out her chair. Charlotte sat, smiling. "So.What did you make?" "See for yourself." Engfa lifted the lid from the dish in the centre of the table. Lemon chicken, golden and glossy, the sauce pooled bright around the pasta, fresh basil scattered over the top. Charlotte stared at it. "Engfa. That's the thing you told me about." "Mm." "How did you know I'd like it?" "I know everything you like," Engfa served her a generous portion with the spoon, her movements unhurried. "Eat before it gets cold." Charlotte took the first bite and closed her eyes. She chewed slowly, then opened them, wide with delight. "Oh my God.This is so good.Engfa, this is incredible." Engfa watched her with an expression that softened in a way Charlotte rarely saw. A quiet pride, almost shy. "It's just lemon chicken." "This food is made by your hands and it is precious to me,” Charlotte said, already reaching for more."Thank you for making this." Engfa nodded and reached for her wine and poured a glass for each of them, the deep red catching the candlelight. She slid one across the table. "To your first real dinner in this apartment." Engfa said, lifting her glass. "To the cook." Charlotte replied, touching her glass to Engfa's. They ate slowly, talking in low, easy voices about the day,Oliver's revolving door, the dog that had stolen a bag of bread from the market. Engfa listened with her chin on her hand, the candlelight warm on her face and every so often she smiled at something Charlotte said. Later, they moved out onto the balcony. The night was clear and cool, the city glowing below them and a pale moon hung above the towers with a few stars scattered faintly around it. Charlotte sank onto the cushioned couch and drew her knees up. Engfa sat beside her, then shifted and Charlotte settled back into her lap with a small contented sigh, her head tipped against Engfa's shoulder. Engfa's fingers moved slowly through her hair. They were quiet for a while, watching the sky. "Tell me something," Engfa said at last. "Something you've always wanted." Charlotte smiled at the stars. "I have five wishes.” “Tell me.” "Fine," Charlotte lifted a hand and counted on her fingers. "One.A small house on a hill near the sea, with a garden full of roses that actually survive and a kitchen big enough for two people to fight over the stove." Engfa's lips curved. "Go on." "Two.A dog.A stupid one, with ears too big for his head. He'll steal your shoes and you'll pretend you're annoyed." "That's not a wish. That's a threat." "Three.Paint.A studio with north facing windows,so the light stays soft all day and a wall that's always covered in your colors. Not just grey." Engfa's fingers paused in her hair for a moment, then resumed their slow motion. "Four," Charlotte said, quieter now. "My dad, laughing at the dinner table with us,telling terrible jokes and making pancakes shaped like animals, for as long as he likes." "And five?" Charlotte turned her head and looked up at her. The moonlight caught in her eyes. "Five is a private jet," Charlotte said with a wicked grin."Just for one night. We fly across the sky, above the clouds, with champagne and nobody who needs anything from us and when we land somewhere warm,we don't even unpack. We just keep flying." Engfa laughed, low and surprised. "That's extravagant." "It's a wish.Wishes are allowed to be extravagant." "You're spoiled." "I'm honest about it,which is different." Engfa bent her head and rested her forehead against Charlotte's temple.
